ASM GmbH POSIMAG® rotMagnetic Incremental Encoders

Contactless magnetic incremental encoder · Full 360° rotation · Up to 184,320 pulses/revolution (PMIR5: 327,680) · Wear-free, robust alternative to optical encoders

POSIMAG® is a two-component system: PMIS4 (sensor head — reader) and PMIR (magnetic ring — rotating scale). PMIS4 stays fixed; PMIR is screwed onto the rotating shaft. Regularly spaced magnetic poles (N-S-N-S) on the ring pass over the Hall-effect elements in PMIS4; each passing pole produces an incremental pulse (A/B channel). A PLC or counter card counts these pulses to derive angular position, RPM, and direction.

Resolution depends on the pole count of the PMIR ring:
PMIR4 — 50/64/90 poles → up to 184,320 pulses/revolution
PMIR5 — up to 327,680 pulses/revolution (highest resolution)
PMIR7 — up to 184,320 pulses/revolution
PMIR7N — alternative inner/outer diameter variant of PMIR7

Incremental encoders don't deliver absolute position — homing is required at every power-on. The Z signal (reference mark) is an optional point on the ring; the PLC uses this signal to zero its counter.

POSIMAG rot vs Optical Encoder Comparison:
Resolution: Optical encoders ~10,000-100,000 pulses/rev typical. POSIMAG rot 184,320-327,680 — equal or higher.
Environmental: Optical encoders struggle in dirty/oily environments — disks foul, readings degrade. POSIMAG rot's magnetic principle is unaffected by dirt/oil.
Mechanical impact: Optical encoder disks break; POSIMAG rot rings are flexibly mounted and impact-resistant.
Air gap: POSIMAG rot tolerates up to 1 mm magnet-reader distance; optical encoders require tighter mechanical tolerance.
Cost: POSIMAG rot is typically 20-30% more economical.

These reasons have made POSIMAG rot the technology displacing optical encoders in the last decade — especially in mobile machinery, dirty industrial environments, and outdoor motor-shaft RPM monitoring applications.
