POSIMAG®, alongside POSIWIRE (cable extension), POSITAPE (steel-tape extension), and POSICHRON (magnetostrictive), represents the fourth core technology in ASM's linear position measurement portfolio. While the first three technologies use a measurement element (wire/tape/rod) extending from a reference point (sensor body) to a moving part, POSIMAG works the opposite way: a small reader head mounts on the moving part, while a magnetic scale spans the entire measurement range fixed to a stationary surface. The reader glides over the scale.

This architecture delivers two main advantages:
30 m + long-distance measurement — the scale is produced continuously to any desired length. Wire- or rod-based technologies struggle mechanically beyond 50 m; magnetic scale exceeds 30 m without difficulty (50 m on request).
Contactless operation — the reader head glides 0.1-2 mm above the scale. No mechanical contact, zero wear. Dirt, oil, water, ice, chips can temporarily cover the scale surface but don't block the magnetic field. The sensor keeps working.

The system consists of two parts. PMIS3 (reader head): 30 grams, zinc die cast housing, IP67 protection. Mounts on the moving part. Output: TTL / RS422 / HTL incremental signal. Resolution 5 µm standard, 1 µm option. PMIB3 (magnetic scale): stainless steel CrNi base, plastic-bonded flexible permanent magnet material. Magnetic period 2 mm or 5 mm (must match the sensor). Adhesive backing for direct surface mounting. Optional reference marks (R1/R2) and end-position marks (E1/E2).
