The cable extension position sensor is the most widely used linear position measurement technology for hydraulic cylinders, mobile machinery, lifts and test rigs. The wire end attaches to the moving object via a small screw while the sensor body stays fixed; the object's motion is measured as wire being pulled from / returned to the spool. Installation is far easier than optical or magnetic scale sensors, mechanical tolerance is forgiving, and the working angle is wide.

The ASM POSIWIRE® family is extremely rich in measurement range and output interface: 25+ models covering 75 mm (WS1.1) to 50,000 mm (WS100M), with outputs including potentiometer, 0-10 V voltage, 4-20 mA current, programmable analog (PMUI/PMUV), SSI digital, CANopen, SAE J1939, IO-Link, and magnetic absolute encoder. IP protection spans IP50 to IP69K.

Key innovations: in 2018, POSIHALL® magnetic absolute encoder outputs were integrated into POSIWIRE; in 2019, POSIWIRE® WST — combination models with built-in MEMS inclination sensor (WST21, WST61, WST85) — were introduced. For ATEX dust hazardous areas, the WS10EX and WS12EX models are certified II 3D Ex tc IIIC T80°C.
